Heat displacement for efficient flue gas cleaning in a sewage sludge incineration plant

Retrofit of heat displacement system with Technoform PPS-GR tubes for effective flue gas cleaning: A project by Wallstein Ingenieur GmbH
In February 2019, our client, Wallstein Ingenieur GmbH, embarked on a project to optimize a waste incineration plant in Dordrecht, Netherlands. Central to this undertaking was the replacement of previously installed PTFE tubes with internal Hastelloy spiral with Technoform’s PPS-GR tubes, designed to handle flue gas temperatures of up to 200°C.
This project involved the installation of a gas/gas heat exchanger using these PPS-GR tubes as heat transfer surfaces. The primary purpose of this system is to facilitate efficient flue gas cleaning through heat displacement. This process enables the transfer of heat directly from the flue gas to the clean gas side of the scrubber (Flue Gas Desulfurization unit or FGD), without necessitating an additional transmission medium.

Designed to handle flue gas temperatures of up to 200°C
The recovered heat is then effectively utilized to elevate the clean gas temperature post-scrubbing, ensuring the compliance with the mandated temperature before the gas is directed into the chimney.
In the wake of this successful innovation, the year 2021 marked a significant expansion of this upgrade. The plant operator decided to install three more similar installations within the same plant. This action led to a total of four lines of the sewage sludge incineration plant being equipped with Technoform’s PPS-GR tubes.
Such a move indicates the high level of satisfaction with the technology and its robust performance under demanding conditions.
